This week in class we had group presentations and they discussed the leadership they seen in the Disney Movie Inside Out. This movie talked about the emotions in our mind and how they control our reactions and thoughts. Joy, she was like the head emotion, she made sure Riley was happy and tried to be happiness to her mind when she was feeling other emotions. Next is Anger he choses when there is something for riley to be angry about and how he should react. Anger is what I would call a hot head everything little wrong thing sets him off. Then there is Sadness, he’s the sensitive side of Riley he makes her cry and allows her to show her vulnerable side. Next is Disgust, she is not mean or rude, she just doesn’t like nasty things or rude people when she’s in control she makes Riley make looks of disgust. Lastly there is fear, she is scared of everything and sees the bad in every situation.

Key Scenes

Key scene 1

Parent brains show more maturity in emotions because all their emotions can touch board while riley’s emotions are over the place. To be a leader in Riley's head you have to be able to communicate and her emotions are commication well. They are always arguing and not getting along while even though her parents emotions don’t agree with each other they can compromise.

Key scene 2

Riley moves to a new school in a new city and disgust, anger, fear, and sadness takes over which show her anxiety. This helps us see how joy isn’t always going to be in control. Leadership isn’t always about control but take advice and opinions from others to help feel out or solve an issue.

Key scene 3

Core memories control each island which make Riley’s personality. So there are islands for each personality trait that Riley’s has. So when Goofball Island breaks down, Joy and Sadness takes charge as leaders to go help save her islands and keep her personalities intact because without those Riley would not be herself.

Key scene 4

Riley’s emotions in her head are maturing and growing as she situate to the new environment that she is in. Bing Bong grows as a leader to realize someone else needs to take Riley to the moon. He sacrifices himself to help Riley grow as an individual and to be able to let go. That is a good leadership role because when you’re a leader you have to make sacrifices for the people you are looking out for or caring for.

Key scene 5

Joy realized Riley can’t only be happy, that Riley has to also experience other emotions that can lead to her being joyful. When she realizes that, Joy pushes Sadness to take control of Riley’s emotions. Now that allows Riley to express her emotions in a healthy way. Sometimes when we express our emotions instead of suppressing them we grow as individual and learn from our emotions. This a form of personally growth for Riley but Joy as well. Joy as a leader learned that when it's her time to stop being leader and let someone else lead and she follow to learn more.

Key scene 6

When she expresses herself to her parents, they open up to each other bring joy back to her. That is a huge step in Riley’s maturing because it shows how she able to get her emotions and open up to the people who can help her and can solve the issues. To solve issues sometimes you have to overcome your pride and get the help you need. I feel Riley and Joy both learned that in this movie.

Comparisons of Characters

Joy can be compared to Ned Weeks from The Normal Heart because they both took the high way or in otrher words stubborn. They felt they way was the best way no matter who gave their opinion. They took no ones advice until they saw that they were wrong .

Another comparison is Riley and Tefiti because in a sense they both lost themselves. Riley lost herself because she moved to a new city and had to make friends and start over which mad her very sad. While Tefiti lost herself because her heart was stole by Maui and it mad her angry. They boy showed emotion of lost because even though Tefiti’s lost was physical, Riley’s lost was the same but mental. She lost her sense of home and Tefiti lost what mad her feel at home.

Bing Bong can be compared to Ida B wells because they both believed in dying for what they believed in. Bing Bong died to help riley move on in life and mature. He was Riley’s happy place and he was take up space for other things to make her happy so he knew it was time for her to move on and he sacrificed himself.

Class Discussion

In class Sadness was Killmonger because they both give themselves task to complete to deal with their sadness. I feel this a good thing and bad thing because its a sense of avoidance. Sometimes this can make your sadness worse because then you’ll eventually start thinking about it. Now if the task is helping solve why you feel that way then its a good task and type of avoidance. Also Joy and Killmonger are alike because they both think their ways will solve all problems but in actuality they don’t and they end up urt in the end. Joy was physically hurt like Killmonger but she did realized she wasn’t ’t the most import emotion. Joy realized they all are the same and so did Killmonger.

Riley and Killmonger aren’t the same because his core memories drives him to anger while Riley’s core memories are confused at the time on how she should feel throughout the movie.

Personal Thoughts

I feel that this movie isn’t really about leadership but the development of person. They showed some leadership qualities but never really fully completed them. The emotions helped Riley grow up and I feel that was the purpose of the moive. How people grow as they get older and how they mature. Also that we wouldn’t be able to grow and mature as a person of we don’t have our emotions. Also how our mind set changes.

I feel this movie can relate to some of the movies we watched and books we read. I feel it closely related to Moana though. Even though Moana did show leadership in the movie, it also showed her maturing like Riley was. They both had some growing up to do riley had to get use to the sense that she was in a new environment and Moana to grow up and prepare for her responsibilities.
