Analyzing Moana
While re-watching Moana I’ve seen a lot of leadership qualities that she portrays. Moana was not a leader but also a mentee. She mentored buy her grandmother Tala to travel beyond and to follow her heart, but her father Temuera taught her how to lead others. Moana loved the sea she thrived to just be in the sea and to sail. There were a lot of thing out in the sea beyond her reef and she wanted to explore it with all her will power. Moana’s village was dying slowly, so she left to save it with the heart of Te Fiti. Te Fit is the God of fertility and she was missing heart which was making Moana’s village food and land to die off. The sea gave Moana the heart of Te Fiti because Moana was a friend of humanity. This shows when she was a toddler and she help the baby sea turtle to sea. Moana loved animals no matter what and it showed with the chicken Heihei. Grandma Tala was very spiritual and like her Moana was too, they both wanted loved the sea and when Tala passed she became a stingray. Tala taught Moana to follow her heart, to travel beyond, the history of how her people got here, and the about the heart of Te Fiti. Temuera guided Moana to lead other, he mentored her to be a mentor, to be a leader for others. With both of their guidance and mentoring I would say they made Moana into a great mentor or true philanthropist. When it came Moana meeting Maui she showed true leadership.
Moana and Maui’s relationship was rocky as first because Maui was this strong, courageous demigod, who thinks she saved the world. In actuality he stole the important piece of it which was the heart of Te Fiti. Moana wanted his help to restore the heart and make the world at peace again. Maui disagreed and did not want any parts of it. They sailed the see going through many obstacles and each one was harder as it went on. They first had to get Maui’s fish hook (Manaiakalani) from the crab, then they fought off the kakamora to get to the angry Te Fiti, in flames. When they first came against Te Fiti they lost and Moana gave up hope and was alone. She the saw a Sting ray who was her grandmother in after life and it gave her hope and confidence to try again. Moana went back the next day to fight Te Fiti and realized she was the God and the heart belonged to her. Maui came to help and together they restored the heart and everything was set straight and the lands were at peace. Moana guided Maui to do the right thing. She taught him that he was wrong and that he could learn from his mistakes and do better. Even though Moana struggled with everything she never gave up on put her dreams to the side and the sea did right by choosing her. Moana had her ups and downs but she matured in the end to save her village which was most important to her. Moana followed her dreams to sail beyond the reef at same time saved her village who was in danger.
Class Discussion
Did Moana’s grandmother Tala impose ideas of seeing a call onto Moana?
I feel that Tala saw that Moana had a calling and that Moana wanted to go after it so she encouraged her to do so. She activated Moana’s potential that she had already had store in her.
Does where you are compared to who you are personally affect you?
Yes, I do believe that where I am and who I am personally affects me. Where I am can push me to change who I am or who I am can push me into getting somewhere greater. It's important to fit who you are into where you are, those two things should aways be greater than one anther to keep you pushing. Moana was very opened minded person, someone who wanted to explore. Where she wanted to be was not where she was so she pushed and pushed and left to go after her dreams and save her villages.
Class Notes
Aneyah had brought up how Moana announcing herself changes. She started with saying, “ I am Moana daughter of…” and by the end she says, “I am Moana.” This shows that throughout the movie she grew and became her own person. She didn’t belong to anyone, she was not under anyone’s power, Moana was her name and she was her own person. She was no longer a mentee, she was now a leader.
Arianna talked about the scene where Maui agrees to work with Moana because he sees her leadership traits. Moana was all about doing the right thing and Maui would care less but about his fish hook. He then got to know Moana and saw that she was doing the right things for the right reasons. It was not for personal gain which is why he would do the right thing. Moana guided him to the right path.
Kamalah had stated that when Moana had given up towards the end, that scene was essential because Moana has to go through some struggles to keep her pushing. That parts show when things get hard, and when things get hard you do not give up. Throughout the movie Moana is faced with challenges and she come up with other idea to help but this point was her biggest downfall, and I feel every great leader need that one downfall that would keep them going for awhile. That downfall/struggle made Moana be able to restore the heart.
Lettirose brought up the point how at the end when Moana was walking was a key scene. How that scene could be compared to Binti because that both see how to create a sense of Harmony between people. Moana and Binti both let their guards down to bring this harmony. I feel this harmony that Lettirose brought to my realization is needed. It emphasizes on how their worlds eyes was not open and they both led their worlds to that realization and in the end making it better.
Naheim stated the point on how Tala and Moana correlates to Ned Weeks and Dr. Brookner because they both support unconventionality to their solutions to problems. That is true their solutions are unconventional because Moana had to go out her way to save the village but in the end it worked for everyone.
Macy said that the little Maui that was tattooed on Maui’s chest represents his heart or could be seen as his mentor. I also got the from the little Maui too because “little Maui” would tell Maui how he was wrong and how he needs to listen. Little Maui was helping Moana guide Maui to doing the right thing, he was like his goof angel.

Moana had a lot of leadership trip traits that can be compared to the stories I’ve done read throughout this course. To me Moana was a great decision maker through this movie. She was hit wit A lot obstacles and she over came each one with her decisions she made and led the people to great path which made them love her just like Cyrus.

Who am I?

It calls me
I am the daughter of a working mother
We are descended from our ancestors
Who found their way across the world
They call me
I’ve delivered us to where we are
I have journeyed farther than they have
I am everything I’ve learned and more
Still it calls me
And the call isn’t out there at all, it’s inside me
It’s like the dreams, always falling and rising
I will carry you here in my heart you’ll remind me
That come what may
I know the way
I am Kayla Na’Kie!
